How I styled a Filipino Ifugao Tapis

Hey Friends!!!
October is coming to an end which means my Filipino American History Month series is ending as well. So I wanted to end the month with an outfit post, last year I styled a traditional barong. (here) This year, I actually asked my aunt in the Philippines to send me something traditional that I could wear and she sent me an Ifugao tapis which is generally a rectangular piece of cloth that is hand woven and is usually worn wrapped around as a skirt.
So like I said the material is an Ifugao tapis made in Ifugao which is province in the Philippines in the Cordillera region. Women in the Philippines used this material as skirts before Europe colonizers but it is still worn by some ingenious tribes today. The way its suppose to be worn is knee length and is wrapped around your waist and held together with a sash. It was actually too long for me so I decided to wear it was dress to give it a modern twist.
The fabric is actually held together with bobby pins in the back but I think it looks cute as a dress, so I might have my mom sew it together. But the material is really thick so I'm not sure if my mom will be able to sew it.
They say that the weaving pattern of the material describes the culture and the temperament of the tribe of the person who made it. I'm not sure about the one I have because my aunt just bought it for me at store but I think that it's really interesting.
So I decided to style it in a modern way but kept it simple to show off the beautiful fabric. I put on a regular jean jacket and some ankle booties in a nude color, so that the colors in the fabric shine on their own.
This is the last blog post for my October PAHM series and I just wanted to take the time to thank you to ladies who let me feature them on my blog. I really wanted to showcase some amazing women who could inspire others by there stories. I wanted to end with a outfit inspired by my heritage since my blog is a fashion blog and I wanted to show a little bit of my culture with my readers.
Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed my little series, hopefully you learned something or was inspired by one of the amazing ladies I featured. I hope you have an amazing day!

XOXO - Nina

  1. I think it's so neat that you featured Filipino American History Month on your blog and wrapped things up with an outfit post. It's great that you reached out to your aunt to send you a traditional garment, and I'm sure she was excited to see how you styled it for modern times. I'd also be interested to know what story the patterns tell. Does it reveal something about the regional resources, history, values and beliefs, etc.? Still, just having your aunt send something from directly from the Philippines is special in and of itself.

And your styling is so fresh and cute. I agree that you need it converted into a dress! Hopefully your mom can figure out something considering the thick, heavy fabric. Thanks for this special and heartfelt feature all month long on your blog!
